Description :
Clockwork were the first ” outside ” band that came to record at Roth Händle so they will always have a special place in my heart. The first day was very interesting. They came to the studio to start recording their first ep and my then next door neighbours were having a rave party for about 600 local kids so all scrap vocals and electric guitars were recorded this really low thumping bass in the background. Naturally we had to redo everything later on.

The first ep was very much an experiment with how we should work together…trying to find formats and sounds that fitted the band. My favorite track is Cold Waters from the first EP. It has a really dark mood to it and some unexpected twists. I really like the mix of harmonicas and Mellotron strings. This is actually the song you can hear in the Mellotron Oboe snippet on the Mellotron page. I also really like the little percussion loop that alnmost becomes the main riff for the song.

The second EP was much more of a full on attack on the songs. We wanted to try to capture the bands sound in a more live way than on the first one. So it became naturally more raw and distorted and loads more guitars. One really weird thing with me and Clockwork is that none of us are into Rock a billy music but when we get together to record we have a natural tendency to put on a whammy bar, a slapback echo and loads of spring reverb. Weird.

The second EP ” Our Crumbling Garden ” was recorded mostly during two weeks last summer and I have a lot of great memories from those sessions. My favorite track is St.Christopher. Based on a Chamberlin Rhythmate loop and just one guitar/vocal take it has a very eerie and startling nakedness to it. Magnus also added some spooky elgam organ to it.

The band has over the last couple of months developed into a really good live band So if you have the chance….

Eating habits :
As Nicklas usually works at the bar Doors in Stockholm he has excellent taste in food and beer but he has also a very good understanding for the economics of having a studio so on the first week of recording the second ep he brought along a case of Italian beer. It was called Birra Moretti and became something of a fifth member at the recordings. The can featuring a moustache clad Italian man with a jug of beer but with a very suspicious look on his face he coloured the recordings more than the Spring reverb I generally use.

Food wise we spent a lot of time and money at the different Pizza places around the studio to very little satisfaction. One of them actually failed in maing me a hamburger so I got a free pizza instead. The reason why I ordered a hamburger was of course because of their terribly bland pizzas. Clockwork are the first band to order in food to a session. They have introduced me to many questionable dishes.
